What is a Learning Disability?

What is a learning disability?

What is a Learning Disability?

More times than not you come across Parents who speak of their children struggling with school, “he isn’t reading at grade level”, “he is falling behind’, “completing her homework is such a battle every night”. However, sometimes Parents associate these difficulties with their children not paying attention in class, being lazy, or accept that their children are just not capable of being a successful student.

Little do they know, that most of the times there is something more than what is visible. A learning disability can come in all shapes and sizes, and the best way to find out if your child would benefit from having an Individualized Education Plan is to have your child assessed. Learning disabilities are a group of disorders that affect the brain’s receiving, processing, storing, response, and ways of communicating information.

Learning disabilities can affect a person’s ability in the areas of

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Spelling
  • Reasoning
  • Mathematics

Children with learning disabilities have the capacity to learn as much as their peers, however, they have difficulty figuring things out by themselves or need a different way to be taught concepts. Learning disabilities do not have a “cure”, but with the right support and intervention, children can be successful in academics. This is why it is so important to identify your child’s needs early on. Early intensive intervention plays a key role in the success of your child’s learning ability. By subscribing  to our newsletter do we need a link here? you will receive free information about characteristics of learning disabilities. We are here to assist you in the development of your child’s Individualized Education Plan, to ensure that the right goals and tools are being introduced to your child. Finding the correct accommodations, tools, and having good goals will work on making your child become a successful student.
