HAPPY THANKSGIVING – IT’S ALL ABOUT THANKFULNESS!
I’ve always felt it a privilege to work with families with special needs children. They are so appreciative of someone helping them understand what their child’s needs are and how to get those needs meet both in the community and the public school system.
One of my first student/client (other than my own children) was in desperate need of a reading remediation program. She was attending an elementary school within a District that did not have anything to offer for remedial reading intervention. This was back in the day when Districts assumed parents were not knowledgeable about their educational rights. In this particular District I was the first advocate they had ever worked with in an IEP meeting. We were both breaking new territory. From the start it was evident that they were not used to a parent coming to an IEP meeting equipped with the knowledge and expertise to be able to fully participate in developing their child’s IEP. With hard work and collaboration we were able to put an appropriate program in place.
All of my cases bring joy for one reason or another, but this particular student remained very special to me. Her family was diligent to ensure she received the education and services that she required in order to reach her potential. She worked hard to improve her abilities, to overcome the hardship of not being able to read has on a student. I’m certain there were time when she and her family felt that all the IEP meetings and interventions were a bit overwhelming, but that just makes the success that comes afterward even more rewarding. This young lady not only graduated with a high school diploma, she is graduating from CSUF this year with her teaching credential. She wants to give back what was given to her, the ability to read and succeed.
To all the families who take on the enormous challenge of confronting the Districts on behalf of their children, THANK YOU for letting me be a part of your journey. THANK YOU for sharing your children with me. I believe every child, regardless of their handicap, should have hope that, whatever their struggle might be, they can have the opportunity to improve and have a successful life.
