IEP Team Collaboration

September 11, 2014 | 6 Comments

Introducing

IEP Team Collaboration

The IEP process can be a very stressful process, especially for Parents whom are unfamiliar with it. Parents many times feel that they are constantly fighting against their child’s School District. The important thing to remember is that for the most part your child’s School District and teachers are there to help your child receive the education he/she is entitled to.  Having good communication between all members of the IEP team facilitates the IEP process. Sometimes when the school district says no, it is because they have nothing to offer. When this happens try thinking out side the box and offer creative solutions. It is important for all members to have an open mind.

There are a few things that can be done to promote collaboration between ALL members of an IEP team, after all you are supposedly all there with a common purpose:

  1. Remember you are an equal Iep team member all with the same purpose, helping your child
  2. As a Parent- voice your concerns and feelings on issues for discussion
  3. Making sure everyone’s voices are heard
  4. Always speak to each other with respect
  5. Maintain good and open communication
  6. Practice effective listening skills
  7. Share your points of view
  8. Be open to new ideas
  9. Ask questions if you need clarification
  10. If you don’t understand special education “lingo” ask what they are talking about
