Educational Therapist Vs. Tutor

Educational Therapist Vs. Tutor

Time and time again we are told by parents that they are spending a lot of money on tutors for their children in hopes of helping with school difficulties. Tutors can be helpful to support a struggling student. However, what many parents don’t realize is it’s highly probable their child would benefit more from an educational therapist.

  1. The main difference between a tutor and an educational therapist is that a tutor is meant to provide support for children in academics and an educational therapist will work on remediating your child’s deficits.
  2. An educational therapist provides intensive and individualized intervention.
  3. An educational therapist can provide formal and informal assessments in academics for your child.
  4. A tutor can provide help with homework and with specific subjects
  5. An educational therapist’s training consists of training in learning disabilities, the psychology behind learning disabilities, assessments, and interventions
  6. A tutor’s training is in time management, specific subjects, and study skills. Most tutors are not trained in remediation strategies.
  7. An educational therapist can provide goals in areas additional to academics. Educational therapists contribute to the development of the intervention plan needed for your child
  8. A tutor works on improving your child’s grades by typically using traditional teaching methods.

Overall, the training of an educational therapist stretches beyond the area of academics. This is beneficial to your child because an educational therapist is trained in psychological factors and effects of learning disabilities along with the understanding of assessments and any other non-traditional interventions that are available for your child. A tutor is a great person for a child to have when they need support in improving their grades. If your child has a learning disability an educational therapist would be the better option to work on any remediation needed.
