The Special Education world encompasses more than just Learning Disabilities. Behavior is also a part of the Special Education world. Many times children gain the reputation of being “bad kids”, without anyone realizing that they might just need extra help and different strategies to help them be successful. Fortunately, we have put together a small list of ways for you to identify if your child could benefit from an assessment to pin-point whether a 504 or IEP will help him/her become a more successful student.
Your child might benefit from a 504 or IEP if…
1.His/her behavior is impacting learning:
look for comments on his/her report cards, progress reports, or any comments made by his/her teacher stating that his behavior is impacting his learning in the classroom
2. Teacher is taking recess away to complete assignments
If your child is having to miss out on his/her recess in order to complete assignments. This could be a clue that due to behavior he/she is having a difficult time with learning
3. Your child is missing out on special privileges at school
Due to behavior, special privileges available to all students are being taken away from your child
4. Being suspended for behavior
It is often easy to label a child as being a “bad child” rather than trying to comprehend and assess behavioral issues your child could be having.
5. Being expelled for behavior
Helping your child cope and manage his behavior is key. If your child is on an IEP, he/she is protected and the school cannot simply expel your child. It is their duty to help your child be successful.
6. Always in trouble at school
If you are constantly receiving notes or getting comments/complaints from your child’s teachers about his/her behavior, it could benefit to have your child assessed and to have strategies and accommodations available to help him/her with his/her behavior.
If you have any further questions, contact us. It might not be so clear as to whether or not s/he would be eligible. Your job is to help your child succeed, we can take the burden and idea of Parents being “the bad guy” in these situations.
