10 Ways to Make the Holiday Season Educational

This holiday season try some of these ways to make Christmas fun & educational.  Finding fun ways to incorporate learning can go a long way! Your kids will be so happy to help they won’t even realize they are building their math, writing, & reading skills.

1.     Write place cards

-This will help your child work on his/her handwriting skills

2.     Write a letter to Santa

-Let them write it on their own. If they have difficulty with spelling work with them by helping them sound out the words and try to figure out which letters are next.

3.     Set the table having them count how many settings are needed

-Tell them who is coming and have them count the number of guests out, then have them make sure they each have a place setting on the table.

4.     Help reading recipes with you

-Great way to introduce new vocabulary. Plus, they will truly enjoy cooking with you!

5.     Write names on gift tags

-Help them by sounding out names and letting them match the sound to a letter.

6.     Learn a new Christmas song

-Beautiful and fun way to work on memory as well as vocabulary.

7.     Help you plan out a menu

-Great way to help them with their planning and executive function skills.

8.     Read Christmas books

-Whether they read to you or you read together, this is always a fun way to spend time with our children.

9.     Count how many gifts are under the tree

-Not only can they count all the gifts, you can get creative by having them make different groups out of them (ex: how many red? how many polka dotted?)

10. Try some math problems.

-Try using fun ways to engage them in mathematical problems such as: If you leave 10 cookies for Santa and he eats 2 how many cookies are left for us to eat?
These tips do not only apply to the holidays, they can be used on a day to day basis! You can find many more ways to engage your child academically within any setting. Most of all don’t forget to have fun with them! We hope your holiday season is filled with love and joy.
